Intercultural competence represents one of the main factors of study in the education of the 21st century, and music education has been constituted in recent years as one of the pillars for its development. In order to reflect on the role that music can play in the acquisition of intercultural competence, this paper analyzes some of the most relevant studies on this subject. First, the concept of intercultural competence is contextualized; next, the relationships between popular music and intercultural competence are discussed, in order to subsequently analyze different intervention programs, which aim to improve intercultural competence through music. Finally, some considerations that may help future researchers are presented.
